Born near Philadelphia in 1900 Alice Neel was one of the best portrait painters of the 20th century. Despite her work not selling so well, Neel stayed true to her vision and followed her passion to paint. She finally gained recognition in her latter years with a retrospective exhibition at The Whitney Museum of Modern Art, New York.
I became familiar with Alice Neel’s work through Judy Chicago’s important book, Women and Art.
Alice Neel was a prolific painter and an expert at seeing beyond the faces of her sitters. Her ability to express the energy and captured emotion of the people she painted was quie exceptional. Her brush strokes are bold and firm and her use of colour is exhilerating. Seek out any exhibition with Alice Neel’s paintings and prepare to be inspired.
Alice Neel died of cancer in 1984.
