Phil Valentine is making the world a better place with his thoughtful film making. Based in Las Vegas, Nevada, he is a man who works with the pace of the city without being swept away by it. As this ‘both feet on the ground’ interview reveals.
TSP: Why do you do what you do?
PV: Because my mom said to me a long time ago “Find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life!”
TSP: What is the best part of your job?
PV: Watching people laugh or cry at something that was just an idea in my head not long before
TSP: Do you have a particular experience you’d like to share with us?
PV: I did documentary on Combat PTSD and received a letter from the wife of a Vietnam Vet. She said after 40 years of abuse from him, after watching our film he broke down and cried and for the first time he told her about all his demons. A year later I received another letter stating that their marriage has never been better!
TSP: If you could go back in time to when you were 20 years old and give yourself some advice – what would it be?
PV: Do everything the same except put your money in mutal funds or IRAs instead of in the bank
TSP: What do you feel is the greatest lack in the world?
PV: I can’t speak for the world but in the United States we’ve lost our compassion and selflessness. We look out for #1 and even though we are told we’re better off we’re more hated around the world then ever before
TSP: What is your definition of a spiritual person?
PV: Someone who believes that there is a greater reason to do good than what you’ll get in return. That there is a higher power and a higher purpose. Living for today will only lead to loneliness tomorrow.
TSP: Do you have a life philosophy that you follow?
PV: Always do favors for those who ask and take nothing in return. That way whenever you need a favor, you won’t have to ask, people will just be there.
TSP: What in your opinion, is the most important thing that parents can give their children to prepare them for life?
PV: Marinate them in love. Make them believe they can change the world if they’re willing to fight, work and love hard enough. Teach them not to be afraid to make mistakes because some of our greatest life lessons come from mistakes. Never give up and most of all, enjoy the journey not the destination.
