Helene Schjerfbeck – Finnish painter

I recently viewed a fine collection of Helene Schjerfbeck’s work at the Ordrupgaard collection in Charlottenlund, Denmark. I was thrilled to discover this skilled painter. Her self portraits almost made me weep, they are so vulnerable.

She is currently being called the Frida Kahlo of the north. I would venture to say that if Frida Kahlo is a butterfly then Helene Schjerfbeck is a moth.

Her paintings are brilliantly executed in elegant simplicity which makes them captivating and endearing.

I think the world is about to discover Helene Schjerfbeck…

This exhibition was a pleasant surprise.
